Mineheads Original Hobby Horse parade
29 March - 3 April
Its origins lost in the distant past the Sailors' Horse dances the streets of Minehead today as it has done for centuries. To the beat of the Drum and the zing of the Accordion it swings and swaggers through the town, flicking the air with its long tail, a bright shiver of ribbons and ostrich plumes, chasing the children, accosting the men and catching the women. In the old days they say it frightened away the Danes. Two thousand years later in the 21st Century it can still make the heart race and the legs get ready to flee. The Hobby Horse is still a vibrant part of the English traditional landscape. Long may it stalk the streets of Minehead on Mayday..." The Hobby Horse usually starts from the Old Ship Aground pub around 6pm, except on Mayday when it starts at 5am, and then goes to Dunster Castle in the evening. See the website for full details of times and places.

An impressive fleet of steam locomotives will be in action, both in-house and 'guests' from other railways. The event takes place on 21st to 22nd and from 26th to 29th March . On both Saturdays and Sundays a vintage bus link will run between Dunster Station and Dunster Village. This is a charming medieval village with a castle run by the National Trust. Advance booking for the Gala will save you both money and queuing at Booking Offices on the day.
